19 FOR SERENA

Serena Williams simply destroyed Russian Maria Sharapova in straight 6-3, 7-6 to win the Australian Open as she overcame a bout of illness. The Russian was looking for her second win over the American since she defeated her at Wimbledon, when she burst onto the scenes as a 17 year old in 2004. The match was never in doubt as Serena broke early an assumed dominance. After a bout of rain, Serena had a fit of coughing but she immediately resumed play racking up another ace at 119mph.The second second was much tighter with each player holding serve and the dominant Serena racking up more aces. As the set went to a tie break Serena broke her opponent before serving out the match with her 17th ace of the match and the 19th career grand slam of her illustrious career to draw her within 3 of Steff Graff's open era record of 22 grand slam titles. There is no doubt that Serena Williams is a tennis legend.

DECIDE NOW

15 days until  Nigerians decide by themselves the direction in which their country will go. Their are up to 20 presidential candidates but only two of these bear any relative significance, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan vying for a reelection under the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Gen Muhammad Buhari (rtd) under the opposition party, APC. Under the Goodluck administration, Nigeria has relatively flourished marking a significant growth in the economy, rise in the GDP, and improvements in general infrastructure, health care(The Ebola scare was handled effectively and decisively), transportation and a revamp of the agricultural system. Now all these are positives that can be drawn from this current administration, but there is still a negative feeling among Nigerians that this current administration hasn't lived up to its billing. In 2011, there was an air of optimism as Jonathan comfortably won the election in a landslide victory but most Nigerians still suffer from lack of certain fundamental amenities. Since the administration started, security has been a major challenge as the country has been fighting an uphill battle against the extremist Islamic sect "Boko Haram". There have been claims that this sect was funded by the opposition to foil the plans of the government but no proof has been brought forward. Power has been a major issue in Nigeria and investments have been lost to other countries due to unstable and erratic power supply. This was one of the many hopes in which the current administration has failed. Some Nigerians even go as far as to say that the situation is getting worse.
Now, Major Buhari is known to be a strict disciplinarian and an authoritative figure but some say he may be an extremist.Buhari is known to be honest and he always comes across as the peoples man. During his brief stint as Head of State, many corrupt public office holders were jailed and this was when he seized power in a military coup. He has contested the presidential elections four times and has lost all. He may be exactly what Nigeria needs in this dire situation but he he and his political party have preached "CHANGE" but no one has explained how this purported change is to come about. Most of his party members were either forced out from the ruling party or were denied platforms to contest elections so it is hard to see how any thing is going to be any different. His previous stint as Head of State was marred with controversy as he jailed many political opponents and the Nigerian economy along with the currency, went down the drain. He has been accused by many political activists that he was guilty of money laundering contrary to popular belief. Nigerians have a tough decision to make but I have tried as best as I can to present them to you. GOODLUCK OR BUHARI, YOU CHOOSE!!!

Rise or fall of Gareth Bale

With Real Madrid's star man Cristiano Ronaldo suspended for Madrid's next two La liga games, responsibility falls to the most expensive player in the world to fill in his shoes. There have been talks that Bale performs better when Ronaldo is not in the team due to his 11 goals in 11 games without the star man. An example was his memorable goal against their bitter rivals Barcelona in the Copa del ray final last year which won Madrid the trophy or more recently in La liga against lower side Cordoba who Los Blancos were expected to win confidently but seemed to struggling against, With time running out Ronaldo was red carded, it seemed Madrid were going to drop two valuable points and lose their position at the top of the table. Fortunately, up stepped Gareth Bale who secured the points for madrid after winning a penalty and cooly converting from the spot. With the absence of Cristiano, Bale has to step up and drag Real Madrid over the line or at least till Ronaldo is back. For Ronaldo this might be a much needed rest helping him come back better and more refreshed, but for Gareth Bale, "its show time!"

THE SURPRISE SPIRITUAL WEEK AT BABCOCK UNIVERSITY

If you're looking for spiritual growth with academic excellence, welcome to Babcock university. It still came as a shock to us when we were told that worship was going to be for 10 consecutive days at the beginning of the semester. The turn up was appreciable (nice one BU students). Many came out each with their own objectives.

'Good evening Babcock university!' the voice of Prof. Makinde, the school's president resounded each night as he told stories, worldwide tales of how he made it to the top. The part that probably aroused everyone's attention were the talks on marriage. I saw boys up on their feet responding boldly to the marital prayers as the good pastor proclaimed blessings on our future.

Each day's sermon was related to both biblical and present day incidents like Pastor Makinde's incident with the military at the border of three countries showing God's delivering powers.

And we all got a good laugh from the funny reactions on people's faces as they were displayed on the screen.

Surprisingly quite a number of people responded to the altar call the pastor made after each sermon and some went ahead and got baptised.

The week came to a close with a variety section on Saturday evening were various talented students contributed to the worship. The presence of Iperu campus students spiced it up. Xpressions proved their worth once again by showing the importance of the week's worship through a hilarious play.

The holiness club, an association of like minds saying no to drugs, pre-marital sex, cheating as well as gangs and violence was created and dedicated to God by Pastor Makinde.

That it was termed a' spiritual week, did not mean that everyone took it spiritual. Some took it as an opportunity to seek out their missing ribs. Those that had already found theirs saw an opportunity to bind themselves the more. Others just came for the fresh air, as it was an open field event and some also came for the mandatory card signing.

But as many that sincerely attended the programmeespecially the viewers who enjoyed the satellite broadcast from various countries, we could see the truth in the theme 'An amazing future, God at work.'

Turn up!

The New Kanye?

The American rapper and his wife Kim Kardashian from reality show "Keeping up with the Kardashians" are parents to  1-year and 7-months-old daughter North West and becoming father has lead to his current "GOOD BEHAVIOUR" .
At the turn of the new year, Kanye West blessed his fans with single "Only one" and also featured Paul McCartney. From my point of view , this song was inspired by North his daughter. The song was so emotional that Kim Kardashian his wife was reduced to tears.
"I think I was going through my version of my terrible twos. My daughter,  she wants to express herself and she just doesn't have the words for it. And for me there was so many things I wanted to do with film and clothing and I just didn't have the words, resources, backing or the perception that I could do it being that I was a rapper" he told Ellen DeGeneres,  famous US talk show host.
The couple tired the knot last year in Italy having a fancy or should  I say a "WOW" ceremony and ever since the  rapper has been glued to his wife.
Kim Kardashian has been trying to have another baby but Kanye wouldn't say how many children he'd like. For the rapper he is okay with what makes his wife happy .
"I've definitely learned to compromise more, which is something you have to understand when you partner with people in business" he said.
"And I've learned how to shut up more" well, he has always been a quiet person so there wasn't really much learn in  that aspect.
" I have always got someone to think about going home to and you know , somethings for me to be brave for what I want to do for humanity,  but also to be more protective of myself and for my family too , cause there are things I've done in the past that were considered negative, but I was really jumping in front of the tank for other people or for culture in a way," He said. "So now I alway have to have that in mind , that I have a family that I have to protect too."Kanye then claimed to be a better human being since marrying Kim and having North as he considers his actions more carefully and takes in mind that the public may judge him. Do you agree with Kanye?

Famous American DJ's Jail Experience

Jail, one of the most frightening words know to man, most especially when its done abroad. This was the case of famous DJ Cisco who works with Future.
Cisco who accompanied the rapper (Future) to Abu Dhabi for a show was apprehended by airport security officials with marijuana found I one of their bags.
Cisco shares his story of how he ended up spending 56 days in a Dubai jail, even when the United States embassy officials tried to help, it took several weeks to sort the case.
According to Cisco, "No explanations are given for you arrest". Cisco who further said, "there are no rights when you are arrested, they don't have to say 'you have a right to an attorney', 'you have the right to remain silent' or they don't even say you have the right to know what your crime is or was. There is no judge, no jury, you are just assigned to a prosecutor who does whatever he feels like with you".
According to Cisco, all crimes are the same. He made emphasis to an old man of 67 years who stole a box of candy from the airport and is still in jail with people caught with over 20 kilos of cocaine from Brazil.
He said, "In a Dubai court, you just have one answer for your defense which is either 'yes' or 'no' and when you say no, its another case going on".
In Dubai, jail is segregated. They have two sides, there's the Arabic and the African but he was able to stay in either cos he was neither Arabic nor African.
I'm sure jail taught Cisco a lot

Ebola! Who to blame

At the tail end of 2013, there came rumours of a new and very deadly viral disease spreading at an alarming rate all over West Africa but amazingly no one paid attention to this including the world's foremost organisation for health and disease control. The World Health Organisation (WHO) completely misread the situation and it showed how ill prepared the world was in facing a disease spreading on a global scale. 2014 for a large part was a year to forget. It was a year filled with fear for the unknown as most West African countries perhaps with the exception of Nigeria who handled the situation swiftly and decisively, stopping further spread of the virus. The WHO failed to act on the problems it was facing by dragging it's heel in declaring the Ebola virus a worldwide epidemic. The disease ravaged many countries in West Africa including Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and briefly Nigeria leaving over 8810 people dead including health workers. The virus briefly troubled some parts of Europe and the USA although these cases were isolated and effectively treated. With new rumours surfacing in the last few days that the virus was mutating at an alarming rate (although not airborne yet), the WHO organisation and other foremost health groups around the world have to do some soul searching and ask why the situation was allowed to get to its present state . Although the number of reported cases has declined in the three countries still fighting the virus there are still hotspots where the virus is still rampant as most of these cases are not reported. According to a WHO report, Liberia had just one doctor for 100,000 people while Sierra Leone had two for a 100,000 people. Guinea had no data. Entire societies and communities have been torn apart by this disease. There is a stigma placed on those who have survived the illness while people believe that the dead who have been burnt are abominations as it is a taboo in West Africa to burn the dead. Health systems have totally collapsed and now the responsibility of ensuring the sustainability of life falls on the Western and more advanced countries to fund and help this impoverished region and hope for the best.

Diego Costa, Victim or Villan?

Much has been said of the Chelsea centre forward but one cannot deny that the "Mad Brazillian" born player is simply brilliant. He bullies defences,  scores loads of goals and gets a pretty decent number of assists for a centre forward. Only Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez can lay claim to a better goal per game ratio. He has scored against the "big boys" of the Premier league memorably against Arsenal, Liverpool and now struggling Everton. He was known in Spain as a "mad hatter" but he scores goals and all was forgiven. On Tuesday, Costa led the line for Chelsea,  harrying and hasling the Liverpool defence through out the match even though he was guilty of missing a guilt edge opportunity to prevent the tie going to extra time, he will be remembered only for the ill timed stamp on the Liverpool player Emre Can. After he was robbed of the ball, Costa had an altercation with the Liverpool player before stamping on him albeit erroneously. The referee proceeded to book both players both the FA decided to charge Costa with violent conduct with the accompanying 3 match ban if found guilty. Costa and Chelsea have  both decided to appeal the decision and Jose(The Only One) has thrown his support behind Costa claiming it was unintentional. In support of Diego Costa video replays show that Costa was really telling the truth as he was not looking at the Liverpool player, but as we all know, "things are not what they always seem. I think that is bullocks because of Costa's volatile nature. He may have been simply frustrated and lashed out as Cristiano Ronaldo did against Cordoba but who can tell. Meanwhile, Chelsea have cancelled their pre match press conference as a show of support for Costa but they may likely face a charge and a ban along with their precarious Manager. Costa is a genius but he has an air of madness around him.In reality, who am I to say?
